180 HP Power
This unit is a 180 HP Corvair engine and has a 285 cam. It was in a two seat class buggy and had a great running record. Never burnt or exploded. Condition is sound and complete. This has standard GM engine rotation and NO VW adapters were used. It was mated with a 4 Speed Corvair tranny at the time. It has not been fired since the late 1980’s , so it is going to need some exterior maintenance, rubber seals, oil filter, carb cleaning etc. I am including extra parts as clutch disc, fan, input shaft, and more minor items. I also have trannys and 3rd members if you want them. I am not a dealer and I realize this is a borderline ad and may be bounced , but the popularity of Corvair power for VW may hold up here.Equipment has been stored indoors and dry at my home located at 3901 E. Corvair "Muscle Car"
A library has recently been added to the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan. Established with personal donations, the library includes 22,000 pieces dating from the late 1890’s through the 1970’s. Use of the library is by appointment only. But the highlight of the museum is a collection of rare muscle cars. Included in the group is a 1966 Corvair Yenko. A number of engine options were available in the Yenko, the least of which was the Stage IV engine with 240hp from the flat opposed 6 cylinders.
The museum is located at 6865 Hickory Road in Hickory Corners, and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, through Oct. 31.
Admission is $9 for adults, $8 seniors, $7 students ages 7 through 12, free for children 6 and younger. For more information, call 269-671-5089 or visit the site on the web.

"Concept" Car
The Corvair nameplate was fashioned from the combination of Chevy’s Bel Air and Corvette. Originally designed to compete with the German VW Bug, the Corvair found itself more in league with the German Porsche 911. The air-cooled, six cylinder aluminum engine had a top speed of 115 mph and could turn in a zero-to-sixty time of 10.8 seconds.

Classic Chevy
Although not Corvair specific, there is a nice post on the history of the Chevrolet division of GM at Chevy at Classic Cars Net Article Directory. Some of my best automotive memories involve a Chevy.

Find It On eBay ... Even A Corvair

At my last count, there were 43 different Corvairs for sale on eBay. Most of them were meticulously restored, or have spent plenty of time in a garage receiving plenty of TLC. Some of these cars sell for thousands of dollars. How about a 1965 Corvair Corsa with 20,937 original miles for about $10,000?
And if you want to repair or restore a Corvair, you’ll find plenty of parts on eBay, too. Need a cylinder head for the engine? Current bid $1.29 and I was the 142th person to view that ad.

Restoration And The Law

Let's Restore A Corvair

The thought of restoring an old Corvair is exciting. There are so many things to consider. So many things to remember. Acquiring the vehicle involves more than you may realize.
Be very critical in your examination of your potential project care. Any work that requires the professional touch will cost you. Remember that extensive body work can be very expensive. In the US the average hourly labor rate for body repair and painting is around $73.00. Add to that parts, supplies and any mechanical work you do not perform yourself.
Pay close attention to the interior. Upholstery problems may not pose a big problem, but avoid a car with a gutted interior. A true nightmare. Basically you don't want to pay a fortune for a car that will cost another fortune to restore.
